about
Ibbini Studio is an award-winning collaboration between Julia Ibbini and Stéphane Noyer creating works that intersect contemporary art, design and engineering. Julia is a visual artist and designer, with a background in graphics and collage. Stéphane is a computer scientist and maker, with an interest in computational geometry.
Their practice spans a multitude of disciplines including computational geometry, mathematics, graphic and pattern design, engineering and contemporary craft.
Much of the work stems from research into the origins of pattern and ornamental motifs, tracing how these patterns have traveled over time across cultures and continents through trade or cultural exchange. They frequently combine ornament, pattern or designs of diverse historical or geographical provenance within a single piece.
Their focus is predominantly with materials such as paper, veneer woods or mother of pearl - selected for their delicate, tactile qualities - that are then layered and meshed together using complex collaging methods, with individual projects taking up to a year to complete.
The studio is a recipient of the Van Cleef & Arpels Middle East Designer Prize for their Symbio Vessel Sculpture series. Over the last few years, the work has been shown at Sharjah Islamic Arts Festival (2018 & 2023), Ann Arbor Sculpture Museum (2023), Art Basel Miami, Art Miami, LA Art Fair, Jeddah 21,39, Palm Beach Miami Fair (2024), Treasure House Fair London (2024), and in exhibitions with galleries including Jonathan LeVine (New Jersey), Heron Arts (California) and Long-Sharp Gallery (Indiana).
The studio is based in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates.
