Aniseh

Julia’s paternal family are of Syrian and Jordanian heritage, the family home in Amman being home to many fond memories, in particular of her grandmother Aniseh sitting in her parlour surrounded by her treasured Syrian inlay furniture. The 8-point star is one of the earliest geometric pattern design elements dating back to the 9th century. Although such a motif would typically tile across a flat surface, we explored a less conventional direction; by tessellating and stacking the star pattern around a sculptural form.

The piece is composed of layered, laminated veneer woods. The scale and angle of each layer were mathematically determined so that the inherent planar periodicity of the pattern would distort correctly around the cylindrical shape. Each half is made of 60 individually hand and laser cut parts assembling together like a seamless three dimensional jigsaw puzzle. The layers of wood and mother of pearl were glued together by hand in a process of hundreds of hours, requiring a high level of precision and attention to detail in order for layers to stack up correctly together.
