Combining algorithmic concepts and techniques with reference to ancient patterning and structure is always fascinating. The initial (hand made) drawings for these works are turned into computational tree structures on which graph theory algorithms are applied (graph theory is used in everything from maps to biology applications) in order to achieve the depth effect - that produces the ‘eroded’ appearance of the final piece - while preserving the integrity of the design.
From there it’s a back and forth between us and the algorithms; we direct what we would like to happen within the piece but it’s ultimately the computer that decides how it happens. It takes dozens of iterations of each piece to arrive at a final result where the details flow perfectly.
