Liminal Plane (Mirrors)
The 8-point star is one of the earliest geometric pattern design elements dating back to the 9th century. In these pieces, we were inspired by the beautiful simplicity of the star motif and the possibilities of creating a visually intricate piece referencing ancient geometric patterning and traditional Arabic wood and mother of pearl inlay work. Through use of modern fabrication methods we were able combine the historic with a contemporary viewpoint.
Each work is comprised of multiple layers of laser cut Italian veneer woods and inlaid with mother of pearl. The studio uses customised laser machines to cut each layer, the layers are all treated and assembled by hand in a process that requires skilled artisanship. 3D printed connection systems are hidden within the layered wood so that they appear floating above the mirror piece. The mirror sections are made from polished steel.
