Palaces Above

We are fascinated by patterns – both human-made and natural, from a wide variety of sources. It is the visual complexity that we am drawn to. They are often very recognisable and have historical, natural or contemporary references; sources include ancient monuments, ornament from different cultures, traditional embroidery, mathematical tiling, and Islamic geometry (to name a few).

In this work we improvised outward from the centre of the piece, playing with pattern placement and contrasting colour tones to create a final outcome that is accessible on first reading, but moves toward a contemporary interpretation of traditional ornament the more it is viewed.
